What traffic changes are currently in place?
Beginning April 6, 2026, Brandywine Road is temporarily closed between Piscataway Road and just north of Surratts Road until approximately August 30, 2026.
In addition, traffic patterns on Surratts Road have been modified between Summit Creek Drive and Beverly Avenue until approximately July 30, 2026. One lane of traffic remains open on Surratts Road in each direction, and traffic control devices and signage are in place to guide motorists through the area.
Why is this work happening now?
WSSC Water is completing this work now because other critical southern Prince George’s County water main projects, including S. Osborne Road and Allentown Road, needed to be completed first.
In addition, this phase of work requires a temporary bypass. Because bypass work is not performed during the winter months due to cold weather conditions and the risk of freezing, this construction had to be scheduled between March 15 – November 15.
Why must the Brandywine Road closure and Surratts Road traffic pattern changes happen at the same time?
These traffic changes must occur simultaneously because the work is connected and takes place within the same project area.
Crews are installing a new 42-inch water main on Surratts Road, completing a 36-inch tie-in at the Brandywine Road and Piscataway Road intersection, and installing a 16-inch water main along Brandywine Road.
Coordinating these activities at the same time allows the work to be completed more safely and efficiently and helps reduce the overall duration of disruption.
Will people still be able to access Surratt House (Historic Site & Museum)?
Yes. Access to Surratt House will remain available during construction. However, drivers may need to use alternate approaches and should follow posted detour signs, traffic control devices and any temporary lane shifts in place near the work zone.
For specific information on accessing the Surratt House during construction, please visit the Surratt Historic Site & Museum website.
What detour routes should drivers follow?
Motorists should follow the posted detour signs and traffic control devices around the Brandywine Road closure and through the modified traffic pattern on Surratts Road.
Detour routes include Branch Avenue, Clinton Manor Drive, Pine View Lane and Stuart Lane. Maryland State Highway Administration is also monitoring the traffic conditions and adjusting the timing of the traffic signal at Pine View Lane and Woodyard Road, as needed, to improve traffic flow.
Drivers should allow extra travel time when heading to destinations near Brandywine Road, Surratts Road and Piscataway Road.
