Brings Wealth of Financial Experience to Maryland’s Largest Water Utility
Laurel, Md. – October 16, 2019: WSSC Water welcomes Sandra L. Thompson as the newest member of the water utility’s Board of Commissioners. The Prince George’s County resident was unanimously approved to serve as Commissioner by members of the Prince George’s County Council in September. Her first meeting is today, Wednesday, October 16, at 10 a.m. at WSSC Water’s headquarters in Laurel. The meeting is open to the public and available via livestream directly on WSSC Water’s website.
“I want to thank Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and members of the County Council for entrusting me to ensure we continue to fulfill WSSC Water’s mission to provide safe and reliable water to our 1.8 million customers,” said Thompson. “I am honored to serve and will work collaboratively with my colleagues and management to strengthen the public’s confidence in this great organization, while maintaining our Triple A bond rating and enhancing employee engagement.”
Thompson currently serves at the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) as the Deputy Director, Housing Mission and Goals, where she is responsible for oversight of the mission and affordable housing activities of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the Federal Home Loan Banks. Thompson is a technical expert on multiple issues related to mortgage financing, risk assessment and mitigation, and the orderly resolution of failed firms.
Prior to joining FHFA, Thompson worked for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, where she held various positions over 23 years, most recently as Director, Division of Risk Management Supervision. She has testified several times before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee and the House Financial Services Committee on a variety of housing and financial policy matters. Thompson also served as the Director of Securitization for the Resolution Trust Corporation. Prior to entering the federal government, she worked at Goldman Sachs in New York City and Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Wisconsin.
A graduate of Howard University, Thompson is a 23-year resident of Prince George’s County and has two adult sons – Jarrett and Aaron Nobles.
Thompson becomes the second of three Commissioners representing Prince George’s County. Six Commissioners, three from each county, govern WSSC. The Commissioners are appointed to four-year terms by their respective county executives and are confirmed by their county councils. The Commission expects the third Commissioner representing Prince George’s County to be appointed and confirmed by County officials within the next few months.
