WSSC Commissioners Receive Update on Transformative $250 Million Bio-Energy Project at Monthly Meeting

Meeting is Open to the Public and Available via Livestream

Laurel, Md. – April 17, 2018 – WSSC Commissioners will receive a briefing on the $250 million Piscataway Bio-Energy Project at their monthly meeting tomorrow at WSSC’s headquarters in Laurel. The meeting which starts at 10 a.m., is open to the public and available via livestream directly on WSSC’s website.

The Bio-Energy facility will be located at WSSC’s Piscataway Wastewater Treatment Plant in Prince George’s County, and is the largest and most technically advanced project ever constructed by WSSC in its 100-year history. The project will literally turn poop to power by transforming sewage into renewable fuel capable of providing power to the plant. It will also save money over the lifetime of the project, reduce WSSC’s greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent and vastly improve the safety and quality of biosolids – the nutrient-rich organic material resulting from the treatment process. Commissioners are expected to vote on the contract for phase one of the project, which covers design and early construction work, at their May meeting. With approval, construction is expected to begin in late 2018. The entire project should be complete in spring 2022.
