Laurel – July 9, 2015 – Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett has named Rockville architect and businessman Fausto R. Bayonet the newest Commissioner to represent the county on The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission’s (WSSC) governing board. Bayonet will join the five other Commissioners at the board’s next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, July 15.
"Fausto Bayonet will bring leadership skills and experience to the important work of the WSSC as WSSC faces the challenges and opportunities of the future," said Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett.
A native of the Dominican Republic, Bayonet came to the Washington area in 1971 to further his architectural studies at the University of Maryland. For more than 20 years he held positions in various capacities for a number of architecture firms, working on a variety of residential, commercial and public projects, such as renovations to the University of Maryland’s Byrd Stadium, the Embassy of Nicaragua and the U.S. District Courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia. Since the early 1990s, Bayonet has focused primarily on the real estate business.
“Water has always been a concern of mine, even dating back to my youth in the Dominican Republic,” says Bayonet. “I look forward to my new role as Commissioner helping to provide and protect life’s most precious resource. I am thankful Mr. Leggett has given me this opportunity to work with an organization so crucial to our community.”
Bayonet replaces Gene Counihan who recently retired after eight years of service as Commissioner, in addition to his over 50-year career serving the people of Montgomery County and Maryland. Bayonet has a B.A. in Architecture from Eastern Central University in the Dominican Republic and is the father of four children.
Commissioners are appointed to four-year terms by the Montgomery and Prince George’s County Executives. Each county appoints three Commissioners.
