Laurel – June 15, 2011: Dr. Roscoe M. Moore, Jr. is the new Chair of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission. Moore, a member of the WSSC Commission representing Montgomery County since 2008, was elected to the position during today’s Commission meeting. He will serve until June 2012. He succeeds Antonio L. Jones, a Commissioner from Prince George’s County.

Moore said: “I look forward to support from my fellow commissioners to continue our oversight of a utility that is respected for its fairness in business dealings, its efficiency and competency in operations, and its considerations of decisions designed to keep the utility in step with technological innovations and providing excellent service to our customers.”

In the coming months, Moore said the Commission will focus on “implementation of our new Minority Business Enterprise program; funding for Asset Management Planning and infrastructure renewal; improving service to our customers; implementing the provisions of the Consent Decree; monitoring workforce renewal; and continuing the protection of our environment by seeking alternative energy sources and reducing greenhouse gases.”

Moore is an internationally recognized Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with extensive experience and credentials in epidemiology. He retired from the U.S. Public Health Service with the rank of Rear Admiral. Moore previously served on the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture and the Maryland Health Care Commission. In addition, he served on the Board of Directors for Montgomery General Hospital and was President of the Friends of the National Zoo.

Outgoing Commission Chair Jones said: “I say with confidence, the State of WSSC is very good and in very good hands. I am proud of the accomplishments we as a board have achieved in the past year and the progress WSSC has made in setting the stage for a bright future.”

Also at today’s Commission meeting, Chris Lawson, who represents Prince George’s County, was elected to a one-year term as Vice Chair.

Six Commissioners govern WSSC, which has an annual $1.192 billion operating and capital budget. Three Commissioners are residents from Montgomery County and three are residents from Prince George’s County. The Commissioners are appointed to four-year terms by their respective county executives and are confirmed by their county councils.
