Laurel – July 19, 2013: Mary M. Hopkins-Navies of Fort Washington was seated Wednesday as the newest Commissioner of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC). She will represent Prince George’s County on the Commission.

Nominated by Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, Hopkins-Navies was confirmed Tuesday by the Prince George’s County Council.

Hopkins-Navies is the President and CEO of Hopkins Navies Management Inc. For the past 22 years, she has been a McDonald’s franchisee. She owns and operates 8 McDonald’s restaurants in Prince George’s County, Maryland which employ more than 500 people.

Hopkins-Navies served seven years on the Ronald McDonald House Board of Directors and was instrumental in helping community non-profits receive grants from the Ronald McDonald House. Over the years, Hopkins-Navies has been instrumental in obtaining funds totaling a quarter million dollars for worthwhile organizations. In addition, she has raised more than $70 thousand for the AVON Walk for Breast Cancer and the Susan G. Komen Foundation Race for the Cure.

“My thanks to Mr. Baker for giving me the honor of serving on this important Commission,” says Hopkins-Navies. “WSSC’s mission of delivering drinking water and processing wastewater is crucial to the health of our residents and to our economy.” Noting the irony of joining the Commission in the midst of water restrictions in part of Prince George’s County, she added, “Three of my restaurants were in the affected area and had to close. So literally from day one I saw the Commission from a unique perspective.”

Hopkins-Navies holds a Bachelor’s degree from California State University. She has two children and resides in Fort Washington, MD with her husband.

Hopkins–Navies replaces Melanie Hartwig-Davis, an architect, who is stepping down after serving two years on the Board because she has moved out of Prince George’s County.
