As part of our centennial year celebration, WSSC hosted a Water Symposium on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 – our actual 100th birthday! This signature event, A Century of Innovation, provided an opportunity for water resource professionals throughout our region to gain a greater awareness of new technologies, best practices, innovative trends and share ideas on how to solve the serious challenges facing our industry.

Centennial Saturdays

Customers throughout Prince George’s and Montgomery counties joined WSSC at a series of public events to celebrate a century of serving our communities. The family-friendly events featured behind-the-scenes tours of several of our water resource recovery facilities and our state-of-the-art water quality laboratory with giveaways, and included demonstrations and a chance for one-on-one conversations with plant operators, engineers and scientists. We even held a huge Centennial Saturday Celebration with games, prizes and educational activities to inspire the next generation of water industry professionals!

Imagine A Day Without Water

On October 10, 2018, WSSC took part in Imagine a Day Without Water, a national campaign to highlight the essential role safe, clean, reliable water plays in our daily lives. The education campaign, which took place during National Fire Prevention Week, encourages more investment in water infrastructure to repair and replace aging pipes, plants and pumps. To raise awareness about how crucial water is to fighting fires and public safety, WSSC teamed up with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue and the Prince George’s County Fire and EMS Department at the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute in College Park to highlight what happens when there’s no water to fight a fire.

#InYourNeighborhood Open Houses

Continuing a commitment to transparency and public outreach, WSSC hosted a series of #InYourNeighborhood open houses throughout Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. The meetings provided opportunities for customers to ask, listen and learn about projects, programs and initiatives, including WSSC’s plans to implement a new rate structure in July 2019. Representatives from customer service, design/construction, utility services, finance, water quality and community outreach divisions attended to help ensure WSSC customers knew exactly what was happening in their neighborhoods!

In 2018, WSSC held its first signature fundraising event, the Blue Tie Ball – celebrating 100 years of clean water!. All proceeds from the event supported WSSC’s Water Fund - providing customers in need with assistance paying their water and sewer bill. WSSC has a strong commitment to social responsibility and community service, and thanks to our partnership with The Salvation Army National Capital Area, approximately $70,000 was collected for the Water Fund to help struggling Maryland families. The Water Fund was created by WSSC employees in 1994.

WSSC celebrated another innovation breakthrough with the completion of upgrades to our Patuxent Water Filtration Plant. As we proudly enter our second century of service, this $65 million investment will ensure the continued production of safe, clean drinking water for our customers in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. The upgrades included the addition of Ultraviolet Light (UV) treatment for an added layer of protection. Completion of the project will allow for an increase in daily production from 56 million gallons per day (MGD) to 72 MGD, with emergency capacity of 110 MGD.
