Solar Power
Almost 25,000 solar panels provide green power to three WSSC Water's Water Resource Recovery Facilities and one off-site facility. A new solar facility has been recently awarded.
Two of the three 2-megawatt (MW) ground-mounted installations, containing 8,500 solar panels were commissioned in 2013 at the Western Branch WRRF in Upper Marlboro, Md., and the Seneca WRRF in Germantown, Md. The third site, located in Carroll County, MD is also 2 MW and was commissioned in 2020. The three facilities are the result of a Purchase Power Agreement with Washington Gas Energy Systems and Standard Solar, Inc.
In 2026, WSSC Water awarded a contract for an additional 12 MW of solar power in Washington County, MD. WSSC Water will own 100% of the Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and all the environmental attributes generated from the project. The 12 MW site is expected to produce 22,000 MWh/year for WSSC Water for the next 20 years.
