*Update: 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2026* Essential-Water-Use-Only Request Remains in Effect; Situation Stabilized, Critical Electrical Work Continues

Laurel, Md. – September 30, 2026, at 10:45 a.m. – WSSC Water’s Potomac Water Filtration Plant continues to produce water and replenish the water distribution system and power delivery to the plant remains adequate. While the situation has stabilized from a water production standpoint, critical electrical work continues.

The plant is operating under a temporary electrical configuration (inside the plant) while crews work around the clock to fully restore internal power and normal plant operations.

WSSC Water’s essential water-use-only request remains in effect for all 1.9 million customers until further notice. Customers are strongly encouraged to continue conserving water through the following measures:

• Use water only as necessary.
• No outdoor water use, including lawn irrigation systems.
• Avoid or limit flushing toilets (do not flush after every use). 
• Avoid or limit using washing machines and dishwashers. 

There is no boil water advisory and WSSC Water’s drinking water remains safe to use.

In an effort to minimize the impact to the water distribution system, WSSC Water has temporarily suspended all planned maintenance and construction work. We continue to respond to all water and sewer emergencies.

WSSC Water will continue to closely monitor water production, system demand and the status of permanent electrical repairs and provide updates as the situation develops.

WSSC Water’s Potomac WFP, which draws water straight from the Potomac River, is the larger of WSSC Water’s two WFPs, treating and supplying drinking water to approximately 70-75 percent of WSSC Water customers.
