Laurel, Md. – October 1, 2026 –  With the essential water use request now lifted, WSSC Water is moving into the next phase of its response to fully restore the electrical systems inside the Potomac Water Filtration Plant.

While the immediate focus has been to restore water production and keep water storage as full as possible, the focus now shifts to fully restoring the plant to normal operations. WSSC Water operators, electricians and engineers with high-voltage electrical expertise, contractors and Pepco will continue to work until electrical systems inside of the plant are fully restored.

“We are grateful to our customers for their extraordinary conservation efforts and to our state, county and local officials for their partnership and support throughout this incident,” said WSSC Water General Manager & CEO Kishia L. Powell. “Our work does not stop with the immediate response. We continue the examination of the electrical systems at the Potomac Water Filtration Plant to take corrective actions now and use what we learn to further strengthen the resilience of this critical facility through planned projects.”

WSSC Water will keep customers, elected officials and other stakeholders informed as crews investigate the issue and implement corrective measures.

Should customers need to take any action during this phase of our response or in the future, WSSC Water will communicate that information promptly.
