Laurel, Md. – June 17, 2025 – WSSC Water Commissioners are holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, June 18, beginning at 10 a.m. The meeting, held in person at the WSSC Water building in Laurel, is open to the public and available via livestream from WSSC Water’s website.

During this month’s meeting, Commissioners are scheduled to adopt WSSC Water’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 $1.8 billion operating and capital budget, which was unanimously approved in May by the Montgomery and Prince George’s County Councils. The budget delivers key projects and initiatives for 1.9 million customers, including:

  • More than $440 million to upgrade aging pipes, pumps and plants
  • $33.6 million to replace customer-owned lead water service lines, helping homeowners go lead-free
  • Nearly $9 million in financial assistance to help income-constrained customers – a 14 percent increase over last year
  • $4.7 million to continue expansion of WSSC Water’s advanced laboratory and purchase equipment to conduct PFAS (forever chemicals) monitoring
  • Nearly $3 million to increase fire flow tests to ensure that fire hydrants can provide water at an acceptable pressure and flow rate for firefighting operations

The budget funds a $715.5 million capital program, which supports local businesses and creates jobs. For every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, 15-18 jobs are created. This job creation is on par with investment in the military, clean energy, transportation and health care.

The budget is supported by a 9.5 percent rate increase, which takes effect July 1. A typical customer with a family of three using 48 gallons of water per person daily would see a quarterly increase of $25.60 in their bill, which includes an increase in fees and other charges.

Also on the agenda this month is a scheduled vote on approximately $54 million in contracts to upgrade critical infrastructure and improve service delivery. The list of all contracts and meeting presentations is on WSSC Water’s website.

During this month’s meeting, Commissioners will also elect a new chair and vice chair for FY 2026.

The meeting includes a call-in option to ensure interested stakeholders not in attendance can provide input. Those watching virtually and wishing to speak should call in at the beginning of the comments section, which begins shortly after 10 a.m. Callers will be admitted from the “lobby” when public comments start.
