Laurel, Md. – July 19, 2025, at 10:25 a.m. Update – The Boil Water Advisory (BWA) issued at 12:30 a.m. today for approximately 11,200 customers in several areas of Prince George’s County remains in effect.

Customers can click on this interactive map and type in their address to see if they live in the area under the BWA. Areas include Hyattsville, Cheverly, Seat Pleasant, Capitol Heights and other nearby communities.

The BWA was issued following a 16-inch diameter water main break at 5540 Columbia Park in Hyattsville, near the Cheverly Metro Station.

Before repairs to the pipe can begin, crews will need to build an access road to reach the location of the broken pipe. There are no residential customers without water as a result of the break. The Cheverly Metro Station does not have water but is operating as normal. There is no estimate at this time when repairs will be complete. It is important to note, all residential customers have water service.

Water samples were collected early this morning, per Maryland Department of the Environment guidelines. Testing is underway at WSSC Water’s laboratory in Silver Spring. An update on test results will be provided early tomorrow morning. More information about the status of the BWA will be provided at that time.

The BWA is affecting customers in Hyattsville, Cheverly, Seat Pleasant, Capitol Heights and other nearby communities. Customers can click on this interactive map and type in their address to see if they live in the impacted areas.

Customers in these areas of Prince George’s County should bring their water to a rolling boil for one minute then cool it before:

  • Drinking
  • Brushing teeth
  • Washing fruits and vegetables
  • Preparing baby food and formula
  • Making ice
  • Giving to pets

All stored water, drinks or ice made recently should be discarded. Boiled water can be stored in a clean container with a cover. Water does not have to be boiled before it is used for bathing as long as it is not consumed.

Customers who experienced low water pressure or no water should boil their water as outlined above.

Water Distribution Stations for Customers

A water distribution station is now open until 5:00 p.m. at the Judith P. Hoyer Early Childhood Center located at 2300 Belleview Avenue in Cheverly.

The BWA is necessary following a water main break, which caused these areas to lose pressure and, in many cases, lose water entirely. When this occurs, there is an increased risk of contamination to the water distribution system. WSSC Water recommends if you live in the affected areas, you should boil your water per the guidelines stated above.

WSSC Water is testing samples from the impacted area to ensure the water is safe for consumption. Once water safety has been confirmed, WSSC Water will lift the BWA and will notify customers that the advisory has been lifted.
