Laurel, Md. – January 26, 2022 – WSSC Water is hosting two virtual public hearings next week for interested customers and stakeholders to provide feedback on its Preliminary Proposed Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) Capital and Operating budget. Staff will provide an overview of the $1.59 billion proposed budget and then receive public comments. Interested members of the public can visit wsscwater.com/fin to find complete budget details.

The budget includes significant cuts amid COVID-19’s devastating financial impact. From FY20 through FY22, WSSC Water has lost approximately $150 million in revenue, which has required the same level of cuts to the budget. Today, one in five customers is past due on their bills – equating to approximately 90,000 delinquent accounts totaling $66 million in arrears. Because of COVID-19’s economic impact, WSSC Water’s FY23 budget also includes $3.5 million – a $200,000 increase from the current fiscal year budget – to help more customers afford their water/sewer bills.

The $1.59 billion preliminary proposed budget is funded with a proposed seven percent average rate increase. A typical customer with a family of three, using 55 gallons of water per person per day, would see a quarterly increase of $16.92 in their bill.
