WSSC Water Restores Fluoride Levels
Fluoride Supports Public and Dental Health

Laurel, MD - September 16, 2026 – WSSC Water is restoring the amount of fluoride added to its drinking water supplied to its 1.9 million customers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties to approximately 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L) effective immediately.
WSSC Water temporarily reduced fluoride levels on April 7, 2026, from 0.7 mg/L to 0.4 mg/L at its Potomac and Patuxent Water Filtration Plants due to nationwide supply chain challenges linked in part to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Fluoride is not mandated by federal or state regulations. Its addition to drinking water is a voluntary public health measure endorsed by leading health organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO), to help strengthen teeth and prevent cavities. The American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatrics are among other health care advocates who endorse the practice as a tool for optimal oral health.
WSSC Water will continue to closely monitor fluoride supply availability, and if future temporary dosage adjustments become necessary due to supply challenges, public notification will again be made.
