Laurel, Md. – February 16, 2026 – WSSC Water crews quickly responded to a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) yesterday near 3207 Cherry Mill Drive in Adelphi, Prince George’s County. The overflow, which was detected at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, was cleared later the same evening at approximately 10:15 p.m. The total volume of this SSO is estimated at 10,386 gallons of untreated wastewater that overflowed from a manhole. The SSO was caused by a blockage created by “flushable” wipes and heavy rags, similar to paper towels.

WSSC Water crews arrived shortly after the overflow began and promptly worked to identify and clear the sewer line blockage. The untreated wastewater entered a storm drain that discharges into Paint Branch Creek. Crews have initiated cleanup and restoration efforts in the affected area. Warning signs have been posted advising residents to avoid the area until further notice.

WSSC Water reminds customers to flush only the 3 Ps - Pee, Poop and toilet Paper – and keep wipes out of the pipes.
