Act Now: Collections Outreach & Late Fees Resume in January
In early January 2026, WSSC Water will resume late fees and begin collections outreach to customers with past-due balances. This extensive outreach process includes multiple steps designed to contact customers and provide opportunities to resolve outstanding water/sewer bills before a service disconnection. Customers receive a series of automated phone calls and mailed notices as their accounts move through collections. Throughout the multi-month process, customers are informed about financial assistance options, including flexible payment plans. WSSC Water will prioritize accounts for collections outreach based on the amount owed and delinquency duration. Following the extensive outreach process, WSSC Water will resume service disconnections for accounts with past-due balances starting on March 1, 2026, for commercial customers and April 1, 2026, for residential customers.
In October 2025, collections were temporarily suspended, late fees waived, and service interruptions paused in response to the federal government shutdown and other government actions.
As of late December, approximately 107,000 accounts totaling more than $73 million are past due; 95 percent are residential customers.
