The water distribution system’s Pre-stressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP) transmission mains are a major priority for WSSC. These pipes are manufactured with concrete and reinforced with steel wire bands. Corrosion can cause gradual deterioration of the wires in some PCCP lines.
WSSC inspects PCCP, and when necessary, replaces corroded sections. Inspections of PCCP mains, 48 inches and larger, have been stepped up from approximately 12 miles per year to about 18 miles per year. Beginning in FY13, the program added 36-inch and 42-inch diameter PCCP to the inventory of pipelines we inspect.
The PCCP Management Program is an asset management strategy for 36-inch and larger PCCP water transmission mains. The program was first established at WSSC in the early 1980s. There are seven components to the program.
