Why Does WSSC Water Inspect Gas Appliances?

Do you have gas appliances?

WSSC Water is charged with the enforcement of gas-related regulations found in the WSSC Plumbing and Fuel Gas Code. WSSC Water was given the authority under provisions of the Annotated Code of Maryland and provisions found in the Maryland Public Utilities Articles. Gas appliances can release deadly carbon monoxide (CO) if not properly installed or due to malfunction.

For your safety, WSSC Water permits and inspections are required for these new/replaced gas appliances:

  • Furnaces and boilers
  • Water heaters (tank type or tankless)
  • Gas logs
  • Dryers
  • Ranges and cooktops
  • Outside gas grills (if attached to natural or propane gas)
  • Gas lights
  • Fireplaces
  • Room heaters and generators

NOTE: Gas appliance installations should only be performed by WSSC Water-licensed individuals. A WSSC Water permit and inspection are required. The inspection must be performed within 10 days of installation.
