Staff to Provide Briefing on Innovative Pipe Protection Program – Saving Customer Millions

Laurel, Md. – March 16, 2021 – WSSC Water Commissioners are holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, beginning at 10 a.m. The virtual meeting is open to the public via livestream from WSSC Water’s website

Commissioners are scheduled to vote on a $2.2 million contract to fund the North Marlton Avenue water main replacement project in the Marlton neighborhood in Prince George’s County. If approved, crews will replace more than one mile of 60-year old pipes with new zinc-coated ductile iron pipes, which have an expected lifetime of about 100 years. Weather permitting, the year-long project will begin in the spring.

This month’s agenda also includes an overview of WSSC Water’s Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP) protection program. These large water transmission mains are the backbone of WSSC Water’s distribution system and are used because of their ability to withstand high pressures. The presentation will highlight the state-of-the-art pipe protection techniques WSSC Water uses to inspect and monitor these large mains. The innovative technology has alerted WSSC Water 44 times to imminent major breaks and saved customers $88 million.

There will be a call-in option to ensure interested stakeholders can provide input during the meeting. The public comment period starts shortly after 10 a.m.
