Laurel, Md. – December 14, 2021 – WSSC Water Commissioners are holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, December 15, beginning at 10 a.m. The virtual meeting is open to the public via livestream from WSSC Water’s website.

Commissioners are scheduled to vote on several major contracts to upgrade and improve aging water and sewer infrastructure, including two $200 million contracts to rehabilitate sewer pipes across Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. These two five-year contracts will help create jobs and support minority contractors in both counties while protecting the environment and public health by making necessary repairs to aging sewer pipes. Approximately 45 percent of WSSC Water’s 11,000 miles of water and sewer mains are over 50 years old.

The meeting agenda also includes a briefing on significant cuts to the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 Preliminary Proposed Budget amid COVID-19’s devasting financial impact. WSSC Water has lost approximately $130 million in revenue during the past two fiscal years, which has required budget cuts of roughly $150 million in FYs 2020 through 2022. One in five customers is past due on their bills – equating to more than 90,000 delinquent accounts totaling more than $70 million in arrears.

The $1.59 billion FY 2023 Preliminary Proposed Budget is based on a seven percent average rate increase – requiring $23.1 million in additional cuts. With the proposed rate increase, a typical customer with a family of three, using 55 gallons of water per person per day, would see a quarterly increase of $16.99 in their bill. Management will seek the Commissioners’ approval to submit the budget to county governments for public hearing purposes.

The monthly meeting includes a call-in option to ensure interested stakeholders can provide input. Those wishing to speak should call in at the beginning of the Comments section, which begins shortly after 10 a.m. Callers will be admitted from the “lobby” when public comments start.
