Laurel, Md. – April 19, 2021 – WSSC Water Commissioners are holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, beginning at 10 a.m. The virtual meeting is open to the public via livestream from WSSC Water’s website.

This month’s agenda includes a detailed financial assistance presentation. Management will detail the ongoing COVID-19-related loss of revenue due to decreased water usage from commercial customers and increased unemployment impacting residential customers’ ability to pay their bills. They also will outline plans to end the late fee waiver program for customers on June 1, 2021. Staff also will highlight plans to continue suspending water service shutoffs during the pandemic and waiving late fees for those enrolled in WSSC Water’s Customer Assistance Program (CAP).

More than one year into the pandemic, WSSC Water is experiencing a 74 percent increase in the amount of money owed by customers compared to before the pandemic began. As of mid-April, $63 million is past due (approximately 86,000 accounts) compared to $36 million past due (about 73,000 accounts) at the end of February 2020.

WSSC Water began waiving late fees on March 12, 2020, to assist customers during the global public health crisis.

During the financial assistance briefing, management will detail WSSC Water’s commitment to making water and sewer bills more affordable by enhancing financial assistance programs, expanding payment plans to more customers and engaging in extensive outreach through their Here to Help campaign.

Any customer, including commercial and government accounts, can establish a convenient payment plan. There is no minimum payment required; WSSC Water will work with customers to set up a flexible plan that fits any budget and enables them to pay what they can afford. The monthly meeting includes a call-in option to ensure interested stakeholders can provide input. The public comment period starts shortly after 10 a.m.
