ChangeModernizationCollaborationandProgress.18WORKFORCEMANAGEMENTEncouragingNewEmployeesWSSCthroughtheassistanceofITandHumanResourcesHRtookamajorstepinstreamliningourabilitytorecruithireandonboardnewemployees.ThisyearwelaunchedPeopleAdminapaperlessonlinesystemthatmakesiteasierforcandidatestoapplyforjobsandforWSSCtotrackapplicantsandthehiringprocess.Prospectiveemployeesineffectestablishandmanagetheirownaccountswheretheycansavetheirresumesandtheirapplicationswhichcanbere-usedasnewpositionswithintheirfieldcomeopen.Internallycandidateinformationissharedelectronicallyamongthehiringteam.Environmentallyfriendlyiteliminatesprintinganddeliverycostsaswellastheenvironmentalimpactassociatedwithpaperapplications.PeopleAdmingreatlyimprovesWSSCsabilitytosustainahigh-performingworkplacethatattractsadiverseknowledgeableandflexibleworkforcethatstrivesforexcellence.SupportingOurStaffOurHumanResourcesOfficefurtherchampionsemployeeteamandorganizationalsuccessbyprovidingtrainingandprogramstostrengthenknowledgeandskillsandtoencouragehealthylifestyleshiftsthatincreaseproductivityandlong-termemployeeretention.Inadditiontoyear-roundcomputersoftwareclassesfocusedonenhancingemployeesskillsHRpartneredwiththeCustomerCareTeamtoofferaworkshopcustomizedespeciallyforWSSConexceedingcustomerexpectations.Otherseminarsandworkshopsaddressedtopicssuchasprojectmanagementlifebalanceandwritingandcommunications.Thewellbeingofouremployeesisparamount.Towardthatendavarietyofwellnessprogramseducatingemployeesaboutdiabetesawarenesshealthyeatingstressreductionfitnessandfinancialhealthwereoffered.ForthesecondyearinarowHRpartneredwithKaiserPermanentetopresentThriveAcrossAmericaaprogramthatencouragesemployeestogetmovingforbetterhealth.Employeesloggedtheirdailyactivityandfollowedhealthyeatingtipsonlineforeightweeks.Severalemployeesnotonlylostweightbutalsoloweredtheirbloodpressureandcholesterollevelsandimprovedtheiroverallfitness.SECURITYSAFETYKeepingOurWorkWaterSafeSafetyisapartofeverythingwedo.Usingpropersafetyproceduresandequipmentnotonlyprotectsouremployeesbutalsohelpsensurethequalityofourwaterandthesecurityofourfacilities.InFY13theSafetyandSecurityServicesGrouptookactiontowardachievingrenewedsafetyandsecuritymeasuresthatwillmakeWSSCwellpositionedtocoordinateeffortswithregionalstateandfederalagenciesinthefuture.AContinuityofOperationsPlanCOOPhasbeendevelopedthatwouldenableWSSCtocontinueitsmissioninthewakeofacatastrophicevent.Theplanwasdevelopedinconjunctionwithaconsultantincludinginputfromeveryareaoftheorganization.TheCommissionhasitsownPoliceDepartmentcreatedbytheMarylandlegislaturein2002toprotecttheareaswatersupplyandinfrastructureagainstsabotageoractsofterrorism.Uniformedofficerspatrolmorethan1000squaremilesofWSSCssanitarydistrictencompassingthevastmajorityofPrinceGeorgesandMontgomerycounties.Theofficersarealsoresponsibleforprotectingapproximately6000acresofwatershedpropertyandmorethan250facilitiesaswellasensuringthesafetyofmorethan1500employeesand100000annualvisitorstoourrecreationalareas.WSSCmeetsorexceedsallapplicablestateandfederalOccupationalSafetyandHealthActOSHAstandardsandrigorouslymonitorsitsoperationstoensurecompliancewiththeoccupationalhealthandsafetyrequirementsoftheMarylandOccupationalSafetyandHealthActMOSHAaswellastheFederalOccupationalSafetyandHealthAct.TheWSSCSafetyOfficeprovidesalistofprogramsandservicesthatensurecompliancewithallFederalStateandLocalregulations.TheseprogramsandservicesincludebutarenotlimitedtosafetytrainingaccidentpreventionfirstaidCPRautomatedexternaldefibrillationAEDinspectionsandauditsaccidentanalysisemergencyresponseplansrandomdrugandalcoholtestingenvironmentalmonitoringanddriversafetyprograms.
