18InvestinginourCommunityTALENTPIPELINEWORKFORCEMANAGEMENTReachingOuttotheCommunitytoBuildaQualityWorkforceENHANCINGOURPROCEDURESSUPPORTINGOUREMPLOYEESWSSCknowsthatthekeytoprovidinggoodservicetocustomersisemployeerecruitmentandretention.Thatswhywehireknowledgeablededicatedemployeestappingintothetalentsoftheresidentsofbothcountiesweserveaswellasregionalandsometimesnationalexpertisetofillkeypositions.Pluswesupportourteambyofferingcareertrainingandeducationalprogramstostrengthentheirknowledgeskillsandoverallwellbeingalongwithotherbenefits.REDUCINGRECRUITMENTTIMEThisyearcontinuingourcommitmenttoenhanceourrecruitmentprocessWSSCimprovedourrecruitmentsuccessratefrom158filledpositionsattheendofFY13to211positionsattheendofFY14.TheaveragetimetofillvacanciesinFY14was58daysadramaticimprovementof75daysinFY13.WewereabletoachievethisbyhiringandtrainingadditionalHRstaffworkingcloselywithhiringmanagersandstreamliningourrecruitmentprocess.OurprocessincludesanewonlineprogramthatmakesiteasierformanagersandHRrecruiterstotrackcandidatesandmovetheprocessforwardmorequickly.OFFERINGOPPORTUNITIESFORPROFESSIONALDEVELOPMENTWSSCprovidesmanyresourcesforouremployeestostrengthenandenrichtheirknowledgeandskills.ThisyearunderanoverallumbrellaprogramcalledStreamInstituteWSSCHRrolledoutaseriesofprofessionaldevelopmentplatformsandresourcesforWSSCemployees.Coursesareofferedontimemanagementmanagementskillsandotherareasintendedtoenhancethequalityofourworkforce.FOCUSINGONEMPLOYEEWELLNESSHappyhealthyemployeesprovidebetterservicetocustomers.WiththatinmindWSSCrolledoutanewemployee-focusedwellnessandemployeeassistanceprogramcalledMyLifewhichoffersmorechoicesforemployeesandsupportsacultureofwell-being.PREPARINGTHENEXTGENERATIONOFWSSCEMPLOYEESWereoutinthecommunityeducatingstudentsaboutwatertheenvironmentandtheroleWSSCplaysinprotectingournaturalresources.Inadditiontomanycommunityeventsandmeetingswealsohostandattendstudent-centeredeventswiththegoalofpromotingenvironmentalstewardshiptothenextgenerationofourplanetscaretakersandbuildingourpipelineoffutureemployeestosupporttheWSSCmission.Someexamplesofouryouth-centeredinitiativesincludeeSTEMCurriculumSciencetechnologyengineeringandmath-relatedcontentdevelopedbyWSSCsFatOilandGreaseFOGUnithasbeenapprovedforintegrationintothePrinceGeorgesCountySchoolSystemcurriculum.WSSCispursuingapartnershipwithscienceteachersinPrinceGeorgesandMontgomerycountiestoprovidecurriculumcontent.eEngineeringAcademyTheacademybeganwitheightstudentsatoneWSSCdepotinPrinceGeorgesCountyandhasgrownintoabi-annualeventattracting25middleandhighschoolstudentsfromeachselectedschool.TheacademylaunchedthisyearinMontgomeryCountytohighdemand.Eightformerattendeesarefurtheringtheiracademiccareersinengineeringorascience-relatedfieldatvariouscollegesanduniversities.ThedayaftertheprogramwascompletedaSaturdayanexcitedEngineeringAcademyattendeeDelonteWestleftavoicemailforWSSC.The18-year-oldseniorfromUpperMarlborosaidTheWSSCprogramtrulyimpactedmylife.InowknowthatIwanttobeameterreaderafterIfinishschool.eInternProgramThisyearWSSCemployed23collegeinternsteachingthemaboutWSSCoperationsandthewaterindustry.InternssupportavarietyofareasfromLaboratoryServicesandPublicAffairstoEngineeringandConstructionandUtilityServices.Theinternshiphelpedmetorefinemygoalsandprovidedtheperfectavenuetotransitionfromthecollegelifetotherealworld.-VickyMuratLaboratoryServiceseScholarshipsWSSCawardstwoannualscholarshipstosupporteducationbuildapipelineoffutureleadersandidentifypotentialtalentforWSSCcareers.05010015020025001020304050607080FY13158positionsfilledFY14211positionsfilledFY1375daystofillpositionsFY1458daystofillpositionsPositionsFilledDaystoFill
