152014AnnualReportINVESTINGINTHEFUTUREMakingInvestmentsthatMakeaDifferencefromPipestoTechnologyMAKINGCRITICALINVESTMENTSWaterisapreciousresourceonwhichweallrely.ThereisnogreaterexampleofWSSCscommitmenttothecommunitythanthenetworkofpipesthreadedthroughouttheregionbringingthisresourcetoourcustomers.ToensurewaterissafelybroughttoourcustomersWSSCinvestsinmaintainingrepairingandorreplacingpipesaswellasdevelopingandadoptinginnovativeideasandtechnologythatimproveourinfrastructure.Insupportofthismissionapproximately10yearsagoWSSCtookonthedifficulttaskofrepairingorreplacingasnecessaryouraginginfrastructureparticularlythe5600milesofundergroundwaterpipes.Thetotalprogramcostisexpectedtoreach3billion.By202550percentofWSSCspipeswillhavereachedtheendoftheirusefullifespan.Thisisevidencedbytheincreasingnumberofwatermainbreaksandleakswhichtopped2100in2007andmorethan17000inthelastdecade.WSSChasexecutedastrategicplanthathasincreasedthemilesofwatermainreplacementeachyearfromjustahandfultoourcurrentannualtargetofreplacing55mileseveryyear.Andwereexceedingthatgoal.Paralleltothispipereplacementstrategyisa12-yearsewersystemenhancementbroughtonbyaConsentDecreewiththeU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgencyEPAtheMarylandDepartmentoftheEnvironmentMDEandseveralenvironmentalgroups.Thisinitiativeissimilartoothersundertakenbyutilitiesacrossthecountrywhereagingsewersystemsrequirerepairandorreplacement.Todatewehavereplacedover127milesofsewermainsandlateralpipessincetheinceptionofthedecreeinDecember2005.Ourinvestmentsininfrastructureimprovementsaremakingadifferenceensuringthatyouhaveaccesstothewateryouneedeachandeverydayandthatcleanwaterisreturnedtotheenvironment.WINNINGAWARDSINWATERFILTRATIONTREATMENTWSSCsfiltrationandtreatmentplantsensurewereprovidingcustomerswithcleanwaterandreturningcleanwatertolocaltributaries.Ouraward-winningWaterFiltrationPlantsWFPproduceanaverageof160milliongallonsofsafecleanwatereverydayprovidingthewaterusedbyWSSCs1.8millioncustomersinMontgomeryandPrinceGeorgescounties.WeoperateandmaintainsixWastewaterTreatmentPlantsWWTPwithacapacitytohandle89milliongallonsofwastewatereachday.WSSCiscommittedtoeProducingcleanwaterthatmeetsallregulatoryrequirementsfordischargingtowatersoftheStateofMaryland.eManagingthebiosolidsgeneratedinthetreatmentprocessinanenvironmentallybeneficialmanner.eOperatingandmaintainingnumerouswastewaterpumpingstationsandrelatedinfrastructuretotransportwastewaterwithoutoverflows.AllofWSSCswastewatertreatmentplantsreceivedPeakPerformanceAwardsfromtheNationalAssociationofCleanWaterAgencies.Theseawardsdemonstrateouremployeescommitmenttotheenvironmentandtoprotectingthehealthofourcustomersandthecommunityweserve.WSSCsPotomacandPatuxentfiltrationplantscontinuetoreceivetheAmericanWaterWorksAssociationAWWAPartnershipforSafeWaterAwardwhichrecognizeswatertreatmentanddistributionsystemsforhigh-qualitywaterdeliveredthroughoutthecommunity.INVESTINGINPIPESTakingCareof11000MilesofPipesWSSCisresponsibleformaintaining11000milesofwaterandsewerpipesthatsthedistancefromWashingtonDCtoEgyptandbackEverydayWSSCmustmonitormaintainrepairandsometimesreplacethesepipesalwaysconsideringthepotentialimpactofourworkonthecommunityandtheenvironment.WereAllAboutPipeseWatermainreconstructionThisyearWSSCreplaced60.36milesofpipeexceedingourgoalof55miles.ThatsnearlyaslongastheentireCapitalBeltway.eSewerreplacementInFY14WSSCReplaced27.28milesofsewerpipes.Replaced12.09milesoflateralsewerpipesexceedingourseven-milegoal.LeadingtheWayAcousticFiberOpticsAFOAcousticFiberOpticsAFOprovideuswithanearlywarningsystemdetectingbreaksorleaksinthelargestpipesinoursystem.WebeganinstallingAFOin2007andwerecurrentlyworkingon36-to48-inchpipeshavingalreadyinstalledthistechnologyinover80milesofourlargepipes.
