WSSC Water Crews Quickly Respond to and Stop Sanitary Sewer Overflow in Oxon Hill

Laurel, Md. – May 18, 2020 – WSSC Water crews quickly responded to and stopped a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) in a heavily wooded area near 1903 Knoll Drive in Oxon Hill. The SSO was confirmed this morning at 8:41 a.m. and stopped at 4:39 p.m. The total volume of the overflow is estimated to be 35,865 gallons of untreated wastewater that flowed into Oxon Run. 

Crews mobilized quickly to set up a temporary bypass pumping operation which ended the SSO by moving the wastewater around the broken section of 12-inch diameter pipe. 

The cause of the SSO is believed to be significant stream erosion and downed trees, which damaged the pipe. WSSC Water will make permanent repairs to the sewer pipe. 

Six signs have been posted alerting residents to avoid the area while repairs are made. 

It is important to note that the water and wastewater systems are separate. This overflow is NOT affecting WSSC Water’s drinking water.

WSSC Water has made appropriate notifications to the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Prince George’s County Health Department.
