Maryland’s Largest Water Utility Celebrates National Engineers Week with Hands-on Learning for Students of All Ages

Laurel, Md. – February 15, 2019 – The future is now, as WSSC opens its doors to dozens of students for on-the-job experience and exploration during National Engineers Week (February 17-23). Throughout the week, WSSC is taking elementary to college-age students to water main construction sites, water filtration plants and teaching them about all things water and engineering.
From job-shadow days for college students to hands-on lessons geared just for girls studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), WSSC will highlight the wide variety of ways the utility uses STEM-related skills to ensure life’s most precious resource flows to its 1.8 million customers.

Discover Engineering Family Day
WSSC joins engineering and STEM organizations at the National Building Museum for a day of exploration.
When: Saturday, February 16, 2019, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Shadow an Engineer Program
Twenty college students pair with WSSC engineers for the day to visit water main construction sites, go behind the scenes at a water filtration plant and don lab coats to see firsthand how WSSC monitors water quality in its laboratory.

Where: Several WSSC locations
Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day
Twenty-five girls from Benjamin Stoddert Middle School (Marlowe Heights, MD) will spend the day with women engineers building complex water filtration models, creating wastewater treatment systems, and exploring the many career opportunities for women in the engineering field.
When: Thursday, February 21, 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
