Laurel – November 27, 2018: It was nearly one year ago, but the record-setting cold last January is still fresh on WSSC’s mind. Due to those bone-chilling cold temperatures, WSSC experienced an all-time-record 802 water main breaks and leaks in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in a single month. But winter won’t break us because WSSC is #WinterReady!

Join us Thursday, November 29, from 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., for a rare look at where the Potomac River flows into WSSC’s largest water filtration plant and learn how the temperature of the river is key in predicting spikes in water main breaks.

At this event, WSSC will:

  • Detail plans to rapidly respond and fix broken water mains during the busy winter season,
  • Demonstrate repairing the common “circle” break,
  • Highlight detection equipment used to pinpoint tricky water main leaks, and
  • Operate the unique tool used to keep water flowing into the plant when ice forms on the Potomac River.
