FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Laurel, Md. – November 6, 2018 – Significant rainfall for the second day in a row has caused a Sanitary Sewer Overflow at WSSC’s Broad Creek Wastewater Pumping Station, located at 10315 Livingston Road in Fort Washington.
The overflow began at approximately 11:49 a.m. and ended about two hours later at 1:53 p.m. The volume of the overflow is estimated to be 81,000 gallons of diluted wastewater, which entered a drainage ditch that leads to Broad Creek.
Five of the station’s six pumps were operating at full speed today during the heavy rainfall. One pump was out of service for mechanical repair. The significant amount of rain in a short period of time overwhelmed the station’s pumping capacity.
WSSC crews have cleaned up debris around the station, spread lime to neutralize odors as a result of the overflow and posted 16 signs warning residents to avoid the area.
It is important to note that WSSC’s water and wastewater systems are separate. This overflow did not affect WSSC’s drinking water.
Notifications have been made to the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Prince George’s County Health Department.
