WSSC Commissioners to Hold Special Meeting To Begin Examining New Rate Structure Options

First in Series of Open Meetings to Inform WSSC Commissioners’ Recommendations to Counties in September

LAUREL, Md. – June 29, 2017: WSSC’s Commissioners are convening a special meeting on Friday, June 30, at WSSC’s Laurel headquarters starting at 10 a.m. to thoroughly review the many considerations involved in developing a new rate structure. The meeting is open to the public and customers will have the opportunity to provide comments at the end of the meeting. The proceedings will be live-streamed on WSSC’s website.

This is the first in a series of special meetings the Commissioners will convene this summer to examine all aspects of new rate structures and receive public feedback with the goal of sending rate structure recommendations to Montgomery and Prince George’s county officials in September. The new rate structure is scheduled to be adopted in June 2018.

WHAT:            Special Commission Meeting on New Rate Structure

WHEN:            Friday, June 30, 2017   10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The public will be allowed to comment at the end of the meeting.

WHERE:         WSSC Headquarters Auditorium, 14501 Sweitzer Lane, Laurel, MD 20707

WHO:              Nationally-renowned rate structure experts will provide an overview of trends and considerations of water utilities when adopting a new rate structure. Affordability, conservation, the cost of providing water and sewer services, and the impact a new rate structure can have on lower and fixed-income customers are a few of the key issues that will be discussed.

WSSC has engaged in extensive public outreach efforts to ensure customers are fully aware of plans to change its current rate structure.  WSSC been involved in nine public meetings throughout May and June, which were attended by more than 650 customers. All WSSC public meetings have been livestreamed.

WSSC’s current rate structure was adopted 25 years ago and good management practices dictates periodic review of rate structure alternatives.
