Monday 10:00 A.M. UPDATE: Avoid University Boulevard between Piney Branch Road and Carroll Avenue for Monday Evening Rush Hour

Crews Making Good Progress on Repairs

| News Release

Laurel – August 1, 2016: Traffic has been challenging in the area of University Boulevard in Silver Spring, between Piney Branch Road and Carroll Avenue following two water main breaks on Sunday.

Commuters are encouraged to find an alternate route for the Monday evening rush hour. All lanes (eastbound and westbound) of University Boulevard between Piney Branch Road and Carroll Avenue are expected to remain closed throughout the day and night while water main repairs continue and road restoration begins.

Updates for the Tuesday morning rush hour will be provided Monday evening.

Crews are getting ready to remove the broken section of 12-inch water main at 807 University Boulevard. That pipe broke Sunday afternoon and water was shut off about 3:30 a.m. today. There are about 34 customers without water, including residents of the University Manor Apartments.

A water station will be open by 11:00 a.m. for affected customers at Sligo Adventist School located at 8300 Carroll Avenue.

The other 12-inch main that broke Sunday morning at 831 University Boulevard was repaired overnight and water service was restored to the 15 affected customers at 3:30 a.m. today.

The water main that runs in this area of University Boulevard is 89 years old.
