WSSC Launches New Customer Assistance Program

Provides Help with Fee Increases

LAUREL, MD – June 30, 2015:  Effective July 1, 2015, WSSC will launch the Customer Assistance Program (CAP) to provide a partial credit to qualified, low income, residential customers for its Ready-To-Serve Charge. WSSC’s new CAP is implemented in partnership with Maryland’s Office of Home Energy Program (OHEP).

“WSSC has worked hard to offer another avenue to assist customers who have limited financial resources,” said GM/CEO Jerry N. Johnson. “The WSSC CAP is another step to ensure that all ratepayers have access to the quality drinking water and efficient sewer services that we provide.”

Residential customers who are enrolled in OHEP will automatically qualify for the CAP. CAP-approved customers will receive credit for the existing Account Maintenance Fee (AMF) and the new Infrastructure Investment Fee or an average of $22 per quarter. These two fees are components of the Ready to Serve Charge. These customers will also be automatically exempted from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund fee (BRF), which WSSC collects on behalf of the State of Maryland. That is approximately $15 per quarterly bill. 

The WSSC Approved Budget for Fiscal Year 2016 includes the CAP as well as a 1 percent increase in the water usage rate and two quarterly fees: an increase to the existing Account Maintenance Fee (AMF) from $11 to $16 and a new Infrastructure Investment Fee averaging $6.The CAP is funded entirely by WSSC ratepayers.
