FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Laurel  – January 21, 2015: WSSC has published the preliminary proposed FY16 operating and capital budget for review prior to its public hearings. The proposed budget of $1.4 billion focuses on the continued rehabilitation of water and sewer pipeline and includes a 6 percent revenue increase. This increase would add approximately $4.20 per month to the average customer bill.

The FY16 Proposed Operating Budget is $715.1 million, representing an increase of $7.9 million (1.1 percent) from FY15. The primary drivers of this increase are water and sewer debt service and the expansion of the Large Valve Program.

The FY16 Proposed Capital Budget is $680.9 million, representing an increase of $55.5 million (8.9 percent).  This change in the capital budget is primarily due to the construction of extensive access roads, by-pass pumping and stream stabilization required to complete the federally mandated Consent Decree construction and upgrade of sewer pipelines.

“We are diligently working to upgrade the infrastructure required to deliver quality water to our customers, as well as protect public health,” said Jerry N. Johnson, GM/CEO for WSSC. “Our goal is to replace and repair 57 miles of small water mains this year as we did last and continue the critical Consent Decree work to responsibly rehabilitate the sewer pipelines in our neighborhoods as well as in our most environmentally sensitive areas.”

This proposed budget also includes an increase to the Ready to Serve fee which is comprised of the Account Maintenance Fee and a fixed, infrastructure renewal component. For more information, please visit www.wsscwater.com/proposedchanges
