FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Laurel – July 1, 2015: WSSC is working to repair a broken 16-inch water main on Georgia Avenue in Wheaton this afternoon. The 68 year old pipe broke around 12:45 p.m. and water was shutdown later in the afternoon. Several homes were flooded and WSSC’s Claims and Emergency Services team will work with homeowners to replace or repair any damage resulting from the water main break.  Approximately 42 customers are currently without water while repairs are underway.

The water main break is located at 12018 Georgia Avenue, between Shorefield Road and Henderson Avenue. At this time, the southbound lanes of Georgia Avenue remain closed between Randolph Road (north) and Henderson Avenue (south) while a crew works to dig down to the break and make repairs.

Once repairs are made and water is back in service, the affected area of the road will be repaved. WSSC will provide updates as significant progress is made throughout the repair and paving process.

WSSC appreciates the patience of our customers and all the commuters affected by the water main break and traffic consequences. The Commission is committed to infrastructure renewal and is currently replacing 55 miles per year of water main.

For 100 years, WSSC has proudly served the citizens of Prince George’s and Montgomery counties – providing drinking water that has always met strict Safe Drinking Water Act standards and protecting the environment through vital water resource recovery services. Our vision is to be THE world-class water utility, where excellent products and services are always on tap.
