Sanitary Sewer Overflow at WSSC’s Piscataway Wastewater Treatment Plant

Drinking Water System NOT Affected

| News Release

Laurel – December 15, 2015 – On Monday morning, WSSC’s Piscataway Wastewater Treatment Plant in Accokeek experienced a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) that started at approximately 8:53 a.m. and ended at 9:58 a.m.

The overflow occurred due to a malfunctioning valve on the plant’s tertiary filter, causing the water to rise over its capacity. An estimated 24,000 gallons of diluted wastewater reached a storm drain and is believed some may have reached Piscataway Creek.

As a precaution, WSSC has posted 17 signs throughout the affected area and appropriate notifications have been made to the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Prince George’s County Health Department.
