Customer Warning: Beware of Fraudulent Water Discount Calls

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Laurel – January 30, 2015 – WSSC is warning customers of a new scam targeting Washington area residents. Scam artists are currently calling residents offering a fraudulent water discount. If anyone receives such a call, please report it to the authorities immediately.

WSSC does not offer discounts on water. Customers receiving unsolicited calls should never provide any personal information, including your WSSC account number. 

If you think you have fallen victim to a scam or received a suspicious call follow these steps:

  • Call your local police department and report the incident
  • If caller ID is available, note the number and provide to police
  • Call the WSSC customer service at 301-206-4001

WSSC is working with other Washington area utilities to help inform customers about the scam. At least one similar incident has been reported in Northern Virginia.
