OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Laurel – December 11, 2014: WSSC is the recipient of the 2014 CIO 100 award from IDG's CIO magazine. The award recognizes organizations around the world that exemplify the highest level of operational and strategic excellence in information technology (IT).
"For 27 years now, the CIO 100 awards have honored the innovative use of technology to deliver genuine business value," said Maryfran Johnson, Editor in Chief of CIO magazine. "Our 2014 winners are an outstanding example of the transformative power of IT to drive everything from revenue growth to competitive advantage."
WSSC earned the honor for its innovative integrated technology solutions, including an agency project coordination system, outage management system, public "in your neighborhood" notification system, e-permitting and project documentation system and a hydrant locator. In addition, a near-real-time data consolidator from various agencies enhances the viewing and analysis of enterprise data to support strategic business goals. The technology solutions link multiple agencies and private sector businesses. Construction activities or system outages are more efficiently coordinated and notifications delivered as close to real time as possible across the two counties the commission serves.
The agency project coordination system has been showing signs of success in its first year of operation. So far, as many as 70 different projects have been coordinated or conflicts resolved by WSSC with Montgomery and Prince George’s county governments, the Maryland State Highway Administration and the City of Takoma Park, Maryland.
WSSC General Manager/CEO Jerry N. Johnson said: “As WSSC undertakes the significant challenges ahead in delivering water and treating wastewater, technology will continue to play a critical role. This award is a reflection of our commitment to innovation especially where it benefits our customers and enables better management of our environment.”
Johnson added: “It made sense for WSSC to take the lead on this program as our infrastructure and services impact every resident, business and activity in the area, and we already had systems in place for management of these coordinated efforts. I want to particularly acknowledge the support of the Montgomery County Council and the leadership of Councilman George Leventhal in moving the agency project coordination system (APC) forward .”
Although still relatively new, the potential value of WSSC’s technology is widely recognized across WSSC service district. “That value is reflected in the rapid rate of adoption and cooperative data sharing we are seeing”,” said Mujib Lodhi, CIO for WSSC. “We are very proud to have been recognized for our achievements by such a prestigious organization. Credit goes to Chief Engineer Gary Gumm, Acting Chief of Plant Operations J. C. Langley, Acting Chief of Customer Relations Derrick Phillips, Infrastructure Systems Group Leader Marcia Tucker, Principal Engineer Hala Flores, the Information Technology, Engineering, Customer Relations and Production Teams, and our collaboration partners in both counties.”
About the CIO 100
The recipients of this year's CIO 100 award were selected through a three-step process. First, companies completed an online application detailing their innovative IT and business initiatives. Next, a team of judges reviewed the applications in depth, looking for uncommon practices and substantial results. Finally, CIO editors reviewed the judges' recommendations and voted on the final 100. Complete coverage of the 2014 CIO 100 awards can be found online at http://www.cio100.com/ and in the August 1, 2014 issue of CIO magazine.
