Laurel – June 13, 2014: WSSC has been awarded the Wendell LaDue Safety Award by the American Water Works Association (AWWA). The award recognizes utilities with more than 500 employees who show an industry-leading approach to safety throughout their organization.

"We have developed and initiated innovative training programs, resulting in an employee injury rate lower than the water/wastewater average over the past five years," said Michael Lewis, WSSC's Safety Unit Coordinator. "This effort starts at the top. We have an active leadership that has encouraged significant initiative in developing and implementing safety programs throughout the Commission.".

AWWA reviews nominees on an annual basis, selecting utilities with exemplary safety records over the past five years, and those which promote and implement safety and health programs that exhibit best practice-level quality.

"I want to congratulate our safety team for the effort that resulted in this award," said WSSC General Manager/CEO Jerry N. Johnson. "This recognition shows how serious we are about protecting our number one asset, the WSSC employees who are ultimately responsible for providing water and wastewater services to our customers."

The award was presented at AWWA's Annual Conference & Exposition in Boston earlier this week. AWWA began honoring utilities for their safety efforts in 2003, and WSSC was also recognized in this category in 2009.

For 100 years, WSSC has proudly served the citizens of Prince George’s and Montgomery counties – providing drinking water that has always met strict Safe Drinking Water Act standards and protecting the environment through vital water resource recovery services. Our vision is to be THE world-class water utility, where excellent products and services are always on tap.
