Number of Broken Water Mains Continues to Climb

Laurel – January 8, 2014: WSSC crews are working around the clock in 16-hour shifts to stay on top of the soaring number of water main breaks, but it is going to take time to catch up with the growing list of broken pipes.

In the past 24 hours utility technicians have repaired 16 broken water mains, but there are still 48 broken water mains in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. That number continues to grow.

WSSC staff that normally puts new pipe in the ground has been pulled to help repair all the breaks. Contractors are also on standby to help when needed, as was the case yesterday with the break on University Boulevard in Silver Spring.

The typical four- to six-hour timeframe to repair a break is longer in the bitter cold because crews need to rotate in and out of their vehicles to stay safe.

Other WSSC crews are continuously being dispatched to spread sand in the area of leaks that cannot be immediately fixed. We thank customers for their patience.
