FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Laurel – October 27, 2014: Winter is fast approaching and WSSC is ready! This coming Thursday, October 30, from 10 – 11 a.m., WSSC will hold a special winter prep media event at our Anacostia Depot, 3500 Kenilworth Avenue in Hyattsville. We will showcase the Commission’s plan to respond to the hundreds of water main breaks and leaks expected to occur this winter.

The combination of cold snaps and aging infrastructure creates a perfect recipe for water main breaks. This past January alone, during the Polar Vortex, WSSC saw 595 water main breaks and leaks, a significant number given that we saw a total of 1,238 in all of 2012 and 1,691 in 2013.

Media is invited to talk to the WSSC staff in charge of our winter weather preparations and see a demonstration of what it takes to fix a typical break.
