** Updated ** Broken Sewer Main in Brookeville Repaired

Drinking Water Is Safe

| News Release

Laurel – October 30, 2013: Repairs to the 16-inch pressurized sewer main in Brookeville are complete and the Reddy Branch Wastewater Pumping Station is back in service. The Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) ended at about 5:50 p.m. tonight.

The broken pipe was discovered Tuesday evening in a heavily wooded area near the 200 block of Market Street in Brookeville, which is just a few hundred feet from the Reddy Branch Wastewater Pumping Station on Brighton Dam Road in Montgomery County.

A final estimate of the overflow is not yet available, however as of 11:00 a.m. today, it was estimated that about 200,000 gallons of wastewater had flowed into the Reddy Branch Creek.

It is important to note that the drinking water is safe. WSSC’s water and sewer systems are separate. Our method of water filtration that prepares the drinking water includes disinfection as part of the process. And, as always, testing of the water is conducted continuously.

Signs warning citizens to avoid the overflow area have been posted in the area. The Maryland Department of the Environment and the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection have been notified of the situation.
