FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Laurel – September 19, 2013: Get your fill of the good stuff. For free. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) is proud to partner with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) in supporting TapIt, a program promoting clean, healthy tap water at business and fountain locations throughout the Metro DC area.
TapIt is a national non-profit building a network of businesses that makes fresh tap water accessible to the public. The campaign’s goal is to reduce landfill waste and litter, as well as promoting an affordable alternative to buying non-renewable bottled water. WSSC and COG aim to quench the public’s thirst for information about the program and where they can get their fill with a public awareness campaign this fall.
A major component of this outreach is centered around TapIt’s recently launched mobile app, “TapIt Metro DC,” where users can search for businesses that are participating in the growing network and fill their reusable bottles and containers on the go. The app makes finding participating businesses as easy as finding an ATM, Metro station or restaurant. With over 400 locations in the Metro D.C. region, finding tap water is even easier. The app is available for free at the Apple iTunes app store and the Google Play store.
"We are pleased to join the TapIt campaign to promote the tremendous value of tap water,” said Jim Neustadt, WSSC’s Director of Communication, who serves as chair of the COG Community Engagement Campaign of regional water supply and wastewater officials. “The TapIt Metro DC app is a great reminder that residents of our region have easy access to great-tasting, healthy, abundant tap water. While the water we get from the tap at home isn’t free, it’s a whole lot cheaper than bottled water. Tap water is a great value.”
TapIt is a multistate non-profit that has partnered with stakeholders in the Washington region and elsewhere in the country to promote tap water. TapIt has locations in over 22 states and the District.
