Laurel – October 31, 2013: The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) continues to make significant progress with its Small, Local and Minority Business Enterprise program, according to a report released today. WSSC awarded $256 million in Minority / Women Business Enterprise (M/WBE) contracts in FY13—31 percent of total awards and an increase of $127 million from FY12. Outreach efforts yielded 158 new MBE firms registered to bid on WSSC contracts. The information is contained in the FY2013 Legislative Report which WSSC is required to submit to the State legislature every year.

“We are fully committed to our SLMBE program and supplier diversity—we are in this for the long haul,” said Jerry Johnson, WSSC’s General Manager and CEO. “As we have said from the outset, we are going to pay close attention to our progress at the end of each fiscal year, analyze the results and adjust our strategies and operations accordingly.”

While contract awards to M/WBE’s saw a significant increase in FY13, contract payments totaled $92 million in FY13. This constitutes 20 percent of total contract payments, missing WSSC’s goal by 6 percent. Awards are a leading indicator of future contract payments, signaling a potential increase in this measurement category in FY14.

Expanding the pool of SLMBE firms is a key aspect of WSSC’s efforts. In FY13 the Commission’s SLMBE Office hosted, co hosted or participated in 75 external events and conducted 53 outreach events. These efforts led to a total of 1,078 new suppliers registered in the Commission’s Centralized Bidder Registration system, including 158 new MBE suppliers.

This year’s SLMBE legislative report can be accessed on WSSC’s website.
