FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Laurel – November 26, 2012: The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) will hold a special media briefingThursday, November 29 at 10:30 a.m. at WSSC’s Anacostia Depot, 3500 Kenilworth Avenue in Hyattsville. We will detail the Commission’s plans to tackle the hundreds of water main breaks and leaks expected this winter. WSSC spokespeople will also offer valuable information for the 1.8 million people we serve when it comes to keeping their own pipes and inside water meters from freezing and bursting.
Cold snaps and WSSC’s aging infrastructure serve as the catalysts for water main breaks and leaks. As the temperatures fall, the number of breaks goes up. 2011’s mild winter resulted in a 1,573 breaks and leaks compared to 2,100 in 2010 and 1,859 in 2009.
At the November 29 briefing, the media will be invited to talk to WSSC staff in charge of our winter weather preparations and see a demonstration of what it takes to fix a typical break.
Demonstration of the typical break repairs. Warehouse yard full of pipe for repairs, maintenance trucks and stacks of pipe as a backdrop for interviews with WSSC staff. Signs with winter weather information.
