Laurel – August 2, 2012: The proof is in the performance as the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) reveals it greatly exceeded water main replacement and sewer main rehabilitation goals for Fiscal Year 2012.
WSSC’s FY’12 goal was to replace 41 miles of water mains. The Commission surpassed its goal by nearly 19 miles or 46%, replacing a total of 59.5 miles of water mains. WSSC crews were tasked with replacing 12 miles while contractors were hired to replace the rest. WSSC crews exceeded their goal by two miles.
On the sewer side, the results also are impressive. The FY’12 goal for sewer main rehabilitation was set at 35 miles. WSSC exceeded its goal by more than seven miles, completing 42 miles. Looking at sewer laterals, which are the pipes that connect a customer with WSSC’s main. The Commission set out to replace five miles of laterals but WSSC exceeded the goal by more than 100 percent. By year’s end, 11.7 miles had been completed.
“Replacing our aging infrastructure is critical and these numbers prove WSSC’s commitment to our customers and the environment,” said Jerry N. Johnson, General Manager/CEO. “I am extremely proud of our staff. Producing such exceptional results requires a team effort.”
While WSSC surpassed its FY’12 goals, the Commission still has a tremendous amount of work ahead to replace our aging infrastructure. WSSC maintains a network of 11,000 miles of water and sewer mains, a system of three water reservoirs impounding 14 billion gallons of water, two water filtration plants, and seven wastewater treatment plants, all of which operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
For 100 years, WSSC has proudly served the citizens of Prince George’s and Montgomery counties – providing drinking water that has always met strict Safe Drinking Water Act standards and protecting the environment through vital water resource recovery services. Our vision is to be THE world-class water utility, where excellent products and services are always on tap.
