FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Laurel – November 16, 2012: The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) today issued a statement advising its customers that it is not in any way affiliated with or supportive of a company advertising insurance for underground watermain leaks on private property.

In the last few days, WSSC has received calls and emails from customers in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties who received an advertisement in the mail for a service contract to provide coverage for breaks in external water lines on their property. The advertisement is being sent by American Water Resources of Maryland. In a letter to customers, the company mentions that WSSC does not pay for underground leaks on private property. While this is true, WSSC does not endorse any underground leak insurance program offered by this or any other company.

Under WSSC policy, the homeowner is responsible for the water service (lateral) from the house to the property line and all the pipes within the house. If the leak is in the WSSC portion of the service or on the main, WSSC will make repairs and restore the affected area to its original condition.

For 100 years, WSSC has proudly served the citizens of Prince George’s and Montgomery counties – providing drinking water that has always met strict Safe Drinking Water Act standards and protecting the environment through vital water resource recovery services. Our vision is to be THE world-class water utility, where excellent products and services are always on tap.
