Boil Water Advisory in Effect

Laurel – November 22, 2012:  Water service has now been restored to the nearly 600 customers in a Largo neighborhood in Prince George’s County. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) has issued a Boil Water Advisory (BWA) for the area. 

Water service was disrupted around 3:50 this morning when a 16-inch water main break broke at 10305 New Orchard Drive.

All of the customers live in a subdivision that can only be accessed by New Orchard Drive off of Harry Truman Drive.  WSSC employees distributed flyers to the neighborhoods and set up a water station to distribute cartons of one-gallon jugs of water.

There is always an increased risk of contamination when a water system, or small portion of a water system, loses pressure. Therefore, the WSSC recommends if you live in the affected area, that you boil water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes (without a dishwasher), brushing teeth and food preparation. Water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute and cooled before using. Water for pets should be boiled and then cooled for their use.

This BWA will remain in effect until approximately 36 - 48 hours after service is restored.  That allows time for mandatory water sampling which ensures quality has been restored.

After the Boil Water Advisory is lifted, WSSC recommends that customers flush their home cold water lines when their water service comes back on; 

  • Run all cold water taps for five minutes.

  • If you have a single-lever faucet, set it to run the cold water.

  • Begin with the highest faucet in your home or business and then open the other faucets one at a time, moving from your highest floor to your lowest.

  • After five minutes, turn off your faucets in reverse order, from lowest to highest.

  • You should also flush your refrigerator’s water lines as well.

This is particularly important for people who have special health concerns because their immunity is compromised.
