Job Description -
GENERAL SUMMARY: Performs skilled work in the operation of complex maintenance equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs as a crew leader overseeing the work of the maintenance crew; Inspects Commission properties for damages (i.e., damaged pipes and fences,); Functions in the capacity of Maintenance Worker when the operation of equipment is not needed; Operates a variety of intermediate powered equipment used in maintenance and construction duties; Operates heavy equipment (i.e., tractor - loader hoe) to excavate sediment, earth, gravel and other materials including operation of any accessories that may be installed on equipment; Operates farm type tractors and mowing equipment; Performs other duties as required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Equipment operators work outdoors, in nearly all weather conditions, day or night; Works in the presence of hazardous chemicals as defined by OSHA standards;
Ability to visually and physically inspect equipment and processes at anytime of the day or night and effectively utilize appropriate safety equipment and procedures. The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a WSSC E-1 equipment license with the contingent requirement of obtaining an E-2 equipment license within a one year period; OR possession of an E-2 license for the operation of powered equipment used in maintenance activities; OR successful completion of WSSC Equipment Training Program and demonstrate ability to operate a minimum of two types of heavy equipment including hydro cranes, 980 backhoe, C-14, 955 Crawler loader, or Grade-All and obtain an E-2 equipment license within a one year period; Or two years experience working in general construction, landscaping, forestry or farming environment operating heavy equipment, which must include operating one of the following: backhoe, excavator, Grade-All, crawler loader, or tractors and obtain a WSSC E-1 equipment license within 6 months with the contingent requirement of obtaining a Commission E-2 license within 18 months.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of, or ability to obtain within the probationary period (one year) and maintain thereafter, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with CDL endorsements, Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card, and WSSC driver's permit. Validity of these licenses and certifications must be maintained as a mandatory requirement of this classification. Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in CPR, First Aid, and obtain a State of Maryland Basic Boating Safety Certificate (if applicable).
