Welcome to the Intergovernmental Relations Office
The Intergovernmental Relations Office oversees the
Commission's legislative agenda and represents WSSC before elected
bodies. The office is responsible for researching, developing,
analyzing, and lobbying for or against legislation impacting the
Commission. We also serve as a liaison between the Commission and
elected officials.
Our webpage is designed to keep you informed about Maryland
General Assembly action that impacts the Commission. The page is
updated throughout the General Assembly Session. You will find
additional information under the Quarterly Newsletter and Other
Documents links. Please contact us at 301-206-8228 to answer any
questions you have.
The Maryland General Assembly
The Maryland General Assembly convenes every year for 90
days to pass over 2000 bills affecting Maryland residents. Numerous
bills are filed each year that have a direct or indirect impact on
WSSC. Legislation directly affecting WSSC is reviewed and voted on
by members of the Montgomery County and Prince George's County
delegations. Most of the work in the General Assembly is done in
Committee. There are numerous Standing Committees and Select
Committees that review and vote on legislation. The House of
Delegates and Senate will only take action on a bill after it has
been reviewed and voted on by a Committee. All bills must pass the
House of Delegates and Senate before the Governor signs them into
law.
The Maryland General Assembly consists of 142 delegates and
47 senators elected from 47 districts. The 2010 Maryland General
Assembly Legislative Session begins January 13 and ends April 12,
2010.
