Who is a Critical Customer?   

A WSSC Water critical customer is a customer whose service connections are crucial to maintaining life or public health. It is our priority to ensure that we know and effectively communicate with our critical customers to safeguard public health and maintain resiliency in serving our more susceptible customers. 

The following three categories come under this classification: 

  1. Critical Care Customer – A customer that requires a continuous supply of potable water to maintain life. This category includes:
    1. Hospitals
    2. Surgical centers
    3. Kidney dialysis centers
    4. Nursing homes/assisted living facilities
    5. Residential homes/multi-unit properties that house persons who require a continuous supply of potable water to maintain life. 
       
  2. High-Priority Customer – A customer that requires water to maintain the general health of the public. This category includes:
    1. Schools and universities
    2. Government facilities
    3. Correctional facilities
    4. Daycare centers
    5. Medical/dental offices
    6. Fire/police stations
    7. Pharmacies
    8. Large commercial water users
    9. Industrial/manufacturing facilities
       
  3. Priority Customer – A customer that requires water to maintain business operations. This category includes:
    1. Food service facilities (restaurants, convenience stores, grocery stores)
    2. Multi-unit properties
    3. Laundries
    4. Car washes
    5. Gyms/fitness centers
    6. Public pools
    7. Hair/tanning salons
    8. Other 

WSSC Water uses existing public records and customer data in addition to customer self-identification to effectively classify accounts under these tiers.
